From October 1 to April 30, many roads in British Columbia legally require your vehicle to be outfitted with snow tires or chains. The government takes this practice very seriously too, because vehicles without the proper snow gear are likely to get turned away from the road, or fined for being non-compliant. Additionally, we encourage drivers to comply with the law for personal safety reasons. What to Look Out For

In order to stay legal, and be capable of physically driving through the elements, it's important to keep an eye out for these important indicators on approved snow tires. When you're shopping for tires, try to buy a set that includes:

• Lettering that reads "M + S", which indicates that tires are mud and snow, or all-season, tires. These are the minimum requirement to keep your tires legal.
• Either a 3- Peak mountain or Snowflake emblazoned on the side. Additionally, some tires have both combined and others have the snowflake, mountain, and M + S symbol present.
• Summer tires of any kind are not permitted, and while you are only required to have two winter tires present, the government recommends that you drive with all four of your tires in a matching, winter-legal, set.
